Enemy Rat

Writing

I found a dead rat in one of our rain barrels. It smelled bad. Why was he there? What was his mission. So I wrote about it.

A few days ago I buried an enemy combatant. When doing a recon of the backyard I discovered that a medium sized rat had fallen into the water barrel. I was alerted to his presence by the scent. It was too late to render aid as he had already succumbed to exposure and exhaustion. The rat had no ID on it and it’s uncertain as to what it was doing in the water barrel. Trying to hide out to collect intel on our position? Plant surveillance devices? Most likely it was trying to sabotage the water supply. Whatever it’s motivation, it was not in uniform so chances are if it was still alive I would have executed it as a spy.

Regardless, it served bravely. The water was indeed ruined. Covered in green dead rat smelling algae. Whoever it was, whatever unit it served with it, it accomplished it’s apparent mission of spreading disgust and spoilage. I buried in the back yard in an unmarked grave with full military honours next to the chipmunk that Corporal “The Cat” Avi ambushed last week.

Avi and I will keep careful watch in case it’s comrades come back to find out what happened to their buddy. If they do we will be waiting. Always vigilant.
